TILE QUANTITY AND LABOUR PLANNING
What can the tile calculator estimate?
Start with the measurements of the surfaces you intend to tile. The calculator establishes the required tile quantity first. An optional labour range can then be added using the selected surface and installation details.
Measured tiled area
Add multiple walls and floors using metres or centimetres. Each area can be identified as a wall or floor so the optional labour calculation uses the appropriate rate.
Doors and deductions
Subtract doors, windows and other spaces that will not be tiled. Wall deductions and floor deductions are checked separately against their corresponding areas.
Tiles and whole boxes
Enter the tile dimensions and wastage allowance to calculate the purchase area and approximate number of tiles. Add supplier pack information to estimate the number of whole boxes.
Optional labour range
Estimate tiling labour and selected extras such as removal, preparation or wet-zone waterproofing. Labour is shown excluding VAT and with VAT added separately.
MEASURING WALLS AND FLOORS
How to measure the area you want to tile.
Measure each rectangular surface separately. This is usually more reliable than treating a complete room as one area, especially where walls have different widths or only part of a surface will be tiled.
Choose wall or floor
Identify the surface before entering its measurements. This does not change the tile quantity, but it allows the optional standard labour estimate to apply the appropriate wall or floor rate.
Measure width and height
For a wall, measure its width and tiled height. For a floor, measure the length and width. Use the same measurement unit throughout the calculation.
Add each area separately
Use another calculator row for every additional wall, floor section, recess or other rectangular surface included in the proposed tiling work.
Subtract untiled openings
Add doors, windows or other untiled spaces as deductions. Select whether each deduction belongs to a wall or floor so it is removed from the correct measured total.
CUTS, BREAKAGES AND SPARE TILES
How much tile wastage should you allow?
A wastage allowance adds tiles for cutting, breakages, pattern alignment and future repairs. The calculator starts at 10%, but the appropriate allowance depends on the tile and layout.
Simple, regular layout
This may be sufficient for a straightforward rectangular area using standard tiles with limited cutting. Confirm the allowance before ordering rather than assuming 5% will suit every room.
Practical starting point
Commonly used for a conventional wall or floor layout where some perimeter cuts, fittings and normal handling losses are expected.
Complex tile arrangement
A larger allowance may be appropriate for diagonal layouts, herringbone, mosaics, extensive cutting, irregular rooms or tiles with significant shade or pattern variation.

How is the tiling labour range calculated?
The labour estimate applies the selected working rate to the net tiled area. Wall and floor rates are calculated separately unless you select a specialist large-format or patterned installation.
Standard wall tiling
Labour only for ceramic or standard porcelain tiles installed on a prepared wall surface.
Standard floor tiling
Labour only for standard ceramic or porcelain tiles installed on a prepared and level floor.
Large-format tiles
Used for demanding large-format installation, typically tiles measuring 800 mm or more.
Mosaic or patterned tiling
Used where mosaics, herringbone or other patterned layouts require additional setting-out and cutting.
Optional work is added only when selected.
The calculator does not assume every project requires removal, preparation or waterproofing. Select only the work that genuinely applies to the proposed tiling area.

OPTIONAL WET-ZONE PREPARATION
How does the calculator allow for waterproofing?
Waterproofing is not automatically included in the tiling labour estimate. If the proposed work includes a shower or other wet zone, select the option and enter the area that will receive the tanking system.
Waterproofing is more than a simple surface-area calculation.
Corners, joints, pipe penetrations, changes of plane and the relationship between the shower area and surrounding floor all affect the installation work. For this reason, the calculator uses practical wet-zone bands rather than relying exclusively on one square-metre rate.
Small wet zone
£180 – £315Indicative installation range for a small waterproofed shower or bath-area zone.
Medium wet zone
£270 – £450Indicative range where a larger collection of walls, junctions or connected wet surfaces requires treatment.
Large wet zone

READING YOUR CALCULATION
What do the calculator results mean?
The calculator separates the physical tile quantity from any optional material-price and labour information. This makes it easier to see what each figure represents before you plan an order or request a quotation.
Net tiled area
The total measured wall and floor area after doors, windows and other selected untiled spaces have been deducted.
Purchase area and tiles
The net area with the selected wastage allowance added. The calculator divides this by the area of one tile and rounds the quantity up to a whole tile.
Whole boxes
Where pack information is entered, the calculator rounds the requirement up to a whole box. Confirm the actual box coverage against the supplier’s product information.
Material-price estimate
This appears only when you enter a supplier price per square metre, tile or box. It covers the calculated tile material quantity rather than installation work.
Core tiling labour
The indicative installation range before optional removal, preparation or waterproofing has been added. The minimum tiling job charge is applied where relevant.
Labour with selected extras
The combined indicative labour range after the selected extras are added. The result is shown excluding VAT and with VAT added separately.

What can change the final tiling cost?
LGrowchance’s calculator provides an early range from the information entered. A final quotation must reflect the actual surfaces, tile specification, setting-out, access and connected work found in the property.
Existing surface condition
Loose plaster, damaged boards, uneven floors, movement, moisture or unsuitable existing finishes can require additional preparation before tiling begins.
Tile size and material
Large porcelain tiles, natural stone, mosaics and fragile or unusually heavy products can require different handling, cutting, adhesives and installation methods.
Pattern and setting-out
Herringbone, diagonal and other detailed layouts normally require more planning, cutting and installation time than a straightforward grid arrangement.
Corners, niches and fittings
Recesses, external corners, pipe penetrations, sanitaryware and fitted units increase the number of cuts and detailed junctions within the tiled area.
Access and protection
Restricted access, occupied rooms, difficult material handling and the protection of completed surfaces can affect the practical programme and labour requirement.
Connected building work
Plumbing alterations, waterproofing, underfloor heating, new substrates, sanitaryware and decorating are separate elements unless they are specifically included in the agreed scope.

Measure the width and height or length of each rectangular wall or floor area. The calculator combines those areas, subtracts any untiled openings and divides the purchase area by the area of one tile. The result is rounded up to a whole tile.
02 Can I calculate wall and floor tiles together?
Yes. Add each area separately and identify it as a wall or floor. The tile quantity uses the combined net area. If you request labour guidance, standard wall and floor rates are calculated separately.
03 Should I subtract doors and windows?
You can add doors, windows and other untiled spaces as deductions. Select whether each deduction belongs to a wall or floor so it is subtracted from the correct measured area.
04 How much extra should I allow for tile wastage?
The calculator starts with a 10% allowance. A simple layout may require less, while diagonal, herringbone, mosaic or heavily cut arrangements may require more. Confirm the final allowance against the actual setting-out before ordering.
05 Can the calculator tell me how many boxes to buy?
Yes. Enter either the number of tiles in each box or the supplier’s square-metre coverage per box. The result is rounded up to a whole box. Always check the supplier’s current pack data.
06 Does the material-cost result include labour?
No. The material estimate uses only the tile price you enter. Optional Growchance labour guidance is calculated and displayed separately because the calculator cannot know whether a supplier’s material price includes VAT.
07 Is the labour calculation a quotation?
No. It is an indicative planning range based on the measurements and options selected. The actual substrate, access, tile, setting-out and complete scope must be reviewed before a final quotation can be provided.
08 Does the labour estimate include VAT?
The calculator displays the Growchance labour range excluding VAT and then shows the VAT-inclusive equivalent separately. The applicable VAT rate should be confirmed when the final project scope is agreed.
